What to Expect After Getting a Filling

Dental fillings are a very common procedure, and although there is essentially no risk to having a tooth filled, you should be extra aware of sensitivity in your teeth immediately after your visit in addition to the following few weeks as your filling settles in. Your Findlay Fillingsregional dentist has some information and tips below to keep you comfortable and smiling bright after a filling.

Right after having a tooth filled by Dr. Krystal DeClerck, DDS

Since Dr. DeClerck at DeClerck Family Dental in Findlay needs to numb your teeth and gums in order to apply the filling, you will have some general numbness in your mouth immediately following the procedure. This means you need to be careful when eating in the first few hours, as you might accidentally bite the side of your mouth or tongue. Slow down, take your time, and you should avoid any problems.

The weeks following your visit

A filling is very effective for preventing further decay of your tooth, but your new filling may be sensitive to variations in temperature for up to two weeks after your visit. Do your best to avoid cold foods and beverages such as ice cream and ice-based smoothie drinks, as well as very hot foods and drinks such as coffee or soup. Dr. DeClerck can recommend special types of over the counter toothpastes that may provide some relief during this time.

It is also common for some people to experience sensitivity or pain in the teeth that are near or next to the tooth that was filled. This is most likely a response of your body's nervous system, and there is nothing wrong with the teeth next to your filled tooth. However, if sensitivity or pain persist in your filled tooth or the teeth near it, contact Dr. DeClerck and she will work with you to provide relief.

Since fillings are prone to decay if not properly cared for, daily brushing with a fluoride toothpaste and daily flossing are recommended. If a filling breaks or falls out, contact Dr. DeClerck so that she can fix the problem immediately. Postponing filling repair can lead to further decay, which is the last thing you want!

By avoiding hot or cold foods and maintaining good oral health care, your filling will last for years to come. If you are in or visiting the Findlay region of Ohio, please contact DeClerk Family Dental for a consultation.
